Congratulations to PhD student Tien-En Chang for receiving the 2025 Best Research Paper Award from Polytechnique Montréal, Canada.

Congratulations to Ph.D. student Tien-En Chang from the Institute of Industrial Engineering at National Taiwan University, who conducted a research internship at the Département de génie informatique et génie logiciel, Polytechnique Montréal, during the 2025 winter term. His research work was presented at the Workshop on Shape in Medical Imaging (ShapeMI), held in conjunction with the 28th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention (MICCAI 2025), where it received the Best Paper Award.
Tien-En’s award-winning paper, titled "Anatomically-Focused Patches for Lightweight and Explainable Knee OA Grading," proposes a novel shape-based image analysis method for knee osteoarthritis (OA), contributing new insights to the field of AI-based medical image analysis.
During his research internship, Tien-En worked under the supervision of Prof. Hervé Lombaert at Polytechnique Montréal, focusing on machine learning and interaction of large datasets of medical images. This internship was made possible through the international research internship program jointly coordinated by NTU’s College of Engineering and Polytechnique Montréal International. The research training Tien-En received at our institute has enabled him to excel in interdisciplinary AI and medical imaging research, reflecting the Department’s commitment to cultivating globally minded scholars with strong academic rigor.
