Special Talk, 2024/5/8
Speaker:
Professor Julie Swann
Position:
A. Doug Allison Distinguished Professor and Department Head of Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, North Carolina State University INFORMS President
Topic:
Analytics for Disease Modeling and Interventions: Learnings from an IE During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Abstract
Dr. Swann and collaborators were selected to do mathematical and computational modeling of the spread of COVID-19 during the pandemic to support governmental agencies. Dr. Swann will present an overview of a disease model (e.g., Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered or SEIR embedded in a stochastic agent-based network simulation) and illustrate how IE skills have been used to contribute to decision-making during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Dr. Swann will also discuss career pathways for Industrial Engineers across a variety of industries.
